London to Edinburgh is one of the UK's great journeys — and one that most people default to doing by train or plane without seriously considering the alternatives. For groups, private coach hire deserves a closer look.
The most direct road route runs via the A1(M) — the old Great North Road — through Peterborough, Doncaster, Newcastle and Berwick-upon-Tweed before crossing into Scotland. Total distance is approximately 400 miles. In good conditions, driving time is around seven to eight hours. With a driver change and rest stops, allow nine to ten hours door to door.
For a group of 20 or more, the economics are compelling. A return rail booking for 25 people in standard class will typically cost more than a private coach hire for the same journey — and the coach goes from your door to your destination, not from King's Cross to Waverley. For groups with luggage, equipment or specific timing requirements, the flexibility advantage is significant.
A non-stop London–Edinburgh run is possible but not advisable. We recommend two stops: one near Peterborough or Grantham (around 90 minutes from London) and one near Newcastle (around five hours in). Both have good motorway services with adequate facilities for larger groups.
For groups who want to maximise time at their destination, an overnight coach departure is worth considering. Departing London at 10pm and arriving Edinburgh around 7–8am means a full day in the city without losing a travel day. Sleeper-configured coaches with reclining seats and blankets make this a genuinely comfortable option.
Your driver will conduct a pre-journey vehicle check and brief passengers on facilities and the planned schedule. Onboard Wi-Fi, USB charging and climate control are standard on our long-distance fleet. For journeys of this length, we also provide complimentary water and light refreshments.
The A1 corridor is one of the best-maintained long-distance routes in the UK, and our drivers know it well. Barring exceptional circumstances, you will arrive within 30 minutes of your scheduled time.

From board away-days to large-scale conferences, the vehicle you choose sets the tone before anyone steps inside. Here's what to consider when booking group transport for a corporate occasion.
